OPERATION SMILE

About

Operation Smile is an international medical charity that has provided over 300,000 free surgeries for those born with cleft lip and cleft palate worldwide. With almost four decades of expertise, Operation Smile delivers free, safe, and effective surgery to people where it’s needed most.

They are dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults in over 30 developing countries who could not otherwise access or afford medical care.

UK Medical volunteers transform children’s lives

Surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists and other Operation Smile medical volunteers give up hundreds of thousands of hours to travel to more than 150 medical mission sites each year to provide free surgeries and transform lives of patients born with cleft lip or cleft palate.

ABOUT CLEFT

About Cleft

Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Without surgery, they can struggle to breathe, eat, speak, and socialise – with many being shunned altogether by their communities.

In the UK, if a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate, they will be treated by the NHS before they are six months old. However, in the many countries, these medical resources don’t exist, or the costs are prohibitive. For some families, the cost of an operation is equivalent to a year’s salary.

What causes cleft lip and cleft palate?

Scientists believe it’s a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Maternal illness, drugs and malnutrition may also contribute to the development of cleft lip and cleft palate.

Can cleft lip and cleft palate be prevented?

Though research is ongoing, findings indicate that mothers who take multivitamins containing folic acid before conception and in the first few months of pregnancy can reduce the risk of their babies developing a cleft.

Can cleft lip and cleft palate be repaired?

With surgery, a child suffering from a cleft lip or cleft palate can have a brand-new, beautiful smile. It can take as little as 45 minutes and £150 to change a child’s life forever through surgery. Of course, any medical procedure is dependent on the child’s general health and the nature of the condition.

While one cleft surgery can bring immediate transformation to a child’s life in as little as 45 minutes, Operation Smile is committed to providing patients with health that lasts—being there to offer patients additional surgeries, dentistry, psychological services, speech therapy and other essential cleft treatments.
